Currently, Goth aesthetics has seen a resurgence in popularity. One of the drivers of this popularity is Jenna Ortega as the lead character in the Netflix series "Wednesday."
Classifying the character’s fashion sense seems to be a little difficult to pin down. Thankfully, there is some guidance.
On the website Refinery29, the show’s costume designer Colleen Atwood gives some insight into the concepts behind Wednesday Addams’s fashion sense. According to Atwood, “To me, it’s more of a graphic juxtaposition of light, gray, and black that really made her look contemporary, like she didn’t just land from another time period.”
Atwood stated that she wanted to update Wednesday’s traditional look of black long-sleeved dresses with white pilgrim collars and jet-black pigtails. She found her inspiration in the youth fashion of London. For example, Wednesday’s loafers were inspired by her granddaughter wearing tennis shoes to her prom.
During the highly talked about episode 4, “Woe What a Night,” when Wednesday attended the RaveN dance, she wore a black dress that, according to the story, was lifted from an antique store. However, this was actually a contemporary dress from the Alaïa fall 2021 dress sourced from the brand’s shop in London.
Wednesday had other looks besides the dance dress and the school uniform. She wears a graphic color-blocked sweater paired with a cropped leather jacket in one episode. She also wore a black-and-white striped t-shirt under a slouchy hoodie.
Here at the Shadow of the Black Rose, we love the new Netflix series, Wednesday, and look forward to future seasons. We’re excited to announce that we’ve added a special section in our Black Rose Shop to help you make Wednesday’s fashion sense your own.
